English studies & activities

Practising English should be fun and engaging and isn’t just learnt in the classroom. Our programme is designed to build confidence by encouraging speaking and listening to English as much as possible. Summer Study Holiday students are immersed in English language and culture through engaging with homestay hosts and a busy schedule of visits and activities.

As well as English lessons, there are lots of things to do including a visit to Ely cathedral, swimming, cinema, and creative workshops. Ely benefits from frequent direct rail services to London and Cambridge and full-day trips to both these exciting cities are included in our Summer Study Holiday programme.

Staying in an English home

Ely offers a safe and friendly environment for young people and all students are accommodated with carefully selected local homestay hosts. This provides the ideal opportunity for practising English in a welcoming domestic setting, learning about English culture and making new friends. Many of our students keep in touch with their hosts long after meeting them while on our courses.

English Study Holiday
with Rowing

Cambridge is famous for many things, and one of them is rowing. The university’s rowing team competes every spring against its rival Oxford  in the famous varsity boat race, held on the

River Thames in London.

We have teamed up with the wonderful Cambridge Rowing Experience based at the Cambridge City Rowing Club to offer a special two-week Study Holiday which includes six afternoon rowing sessions, taught by experienced and qualified instructors.

Classrooms and facilities

English classes are taught between 9am and 1pm (with a short break). Because we only have limited space at our school, the Summer Study Holiday classes take place at Ely Museum's lovely Aedwen Room,  located in central Ely, and so the town and railway station are within easy walking distance.

Students are dropped off and collected at the classroom or other arranged meeting point at the beginning and end of the day. Older students can walk or travel independently to classes if appropriate and agreed with hosts and Lyons Languages.
